plant-based calm full life yoga classes daily food journals group coaching private videos as well as a bunch of free content alright guys is a low carbohydrate diet healthy that seems to be the trend that seems to be what bloggers and authors are promoting are they telling the truth or are they trying to sell books and tell you good things about the bad habits well let's see Dean Ornish just released an article Forks Over knives showed this article embracing fad for a healthy heart is an ocean based on flawed science dean ornish gets into this let's see what he has to say there were some very interesting graphs a picture is worth a thousand words so we'll show you the graph as I get into this in more detail alright let's look at Exhibit A in the chart this is a low fat low protein high carbohydrate plant-based diet as you can see zero issues whatsoever Dean Ornish goes on to say in the article I link in the description below in more than 37 years of randomized trials and demonstration projects my colleagues and I at the nonprofit preventive Medical Research Institute and the University of California San

Francisco School of Medicine have shown that when people with even severe coronary heart disease change to a Whole Foods plant-based diet low in fat and low in refined carbs their heart disease begins to reverse in other words blood flow to the heart improved by 300% as measured by PET scans and 99% of these patients stopped or reversed their heart disease coronary arteries became progressively less clogged and there was two and a half times fewer cardiac events when compared to the randomized control group which was following a 30% fat American Heart Association type diet these patients also showed a 40% reduction in LDL cholesterol without any cholesterol-lowering drugs and they lost an average of 24 pounds in the first year and kept that half that weight off five years later we also found that this diet and lifestyle change gene expression in 501 genes in just three months turning on protective genes and turning off genes that promote heart disease prostate cancer breast cancer colon cancer and other diseases dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has actually done this study himself he just released a study he took

198 patients of those 77 percent that were adherent 99.4 reversed their heart disease esselstyn's study was released in July of 2014 I will leave a link to that study as well again both of these studies showed a high carb low fat low protein plant-based diet halted and reversed heart disease now Exhibit B let's look at a standard American diet this is typically high in fat moderate protein and moderate and carbohydrates with lots of refined carbohydrates this did increase insulin levels anytime you have high carbohydrate consumption with high fat consumption you are going to have insulin issues because fat blocks the insulin from doing its job in the cells you also saw increased total cholesterol increased triglycerides increased oxidized LDL and as you can see increase arterial plaque which leads to heart attacks right and finally Exhibit C the beloved diet which is the craze right now a high-fat high-protein low-carb diet with large amounts of animal products you don't see a change in insulin that's because you need both carbohydrates and fat to cause insulin issues because the fats going to block the carbs from doing

its job however you do see increased cholesterol increased triglycerides increase oxidate oxidized LDL increased fatty acids and a decrease in endothelial function which leads to this arterial plaque as you can see the plaque buildup and the low carb diet is much worse than even the standard American diet and Dean Ornish's article here he states I am not aware of a single study published in a peer-reviewed journal showing that a low carb diet such as the ones described in the Tulane study has stopped or reversed the progression of coronary heart disease indeed as this New England Journal of Medicine studies shows the arterioles worsened on a low-carb diet however our research as well as that of others has proven that a Whole Foods plant-based diet naturally low in fat and refined carbs can reverse the progression of even severe heart disease last March an article was published in Cell Metabolism showing that it's not just fat versus those consuming the most animal protein had a 75% increase in overall premature mortality a 400% increase in risk of cancer deaths and a 500 percent

increased risk of diabetes also studies show for more than 37 thousand men in the Harvard health professionals follow-up study and more than 83,000 women from the Harvard Nurses Health Study showed that red meat consumption part of most low carb diets increased premature mortality from all causes from cancer and from type-2 diabetes so it concerns me greatly that many people are getting the erroneous message that a low-carb diet is better for your heart than a low-fat diet when nothing could be further from the truth in more than 37 years of randomized trials and demonstration projects my colleagues and I at the nonprofit preventive medicine Research Institute in the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine have shown that when people with even severe coronary heart disease changed to a Whole Foods plant-based diet low in fat and low in refined carbs their heart disease begins to reverse in other words blood flow to the heart improved by 300% as measured by PET scans and 99% of these patients stop to reverse their heart disease so there you have it guys that's the science 37 years of studies

esselstyn's done the same thing he's been reversing heart disease at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for over 25 years himself and there are zero zero clinical peer-reviewed studies showing that a low carbohydrate diet reverses heart disease our number one killer in the u.s. folks our number one killer in heart disease is heart disease in the United States so our goal should be to prevent the number one killer obviously any plant-based diet does that the studies show it the science shows it undisputable guys low carbohydrate diets are not health diets I'm so tired of seeing bloggers and authors trying to make money on a trend telling you good things about your bad habits it couldn't be further from the truth don't take your health advice from a blog on Facebook guys take it from real science peer-reviewed science and that science shows that a whole food plant-based diet is best for health links are below thanks for watching guys we'll see in the next video
