we're going to be talking about five things which you should never do in a CVT vehicle and behind me we have the 2016 Lexus ct200h which has an e CVT we'll get into that later but quite a few have you know mentioned hey it'd be cool if you could do one of these videos on cvts I've gotten quite a few requests for it and all of these requests are followed by the very original comment of number one don't drive it so yeah Pat yourselves on the back for that incredibly original joke which you've all beaten to death no doubt it'll be the top comment for this video but let's get right into it now before we get into the things you shouldn't do we're going to go into a quick recap of two of the major types of CVTs on e CVT which is used in this Lexus ct200h and then the more traditional CVT where you don't have electric motors involved so the e CVT which is what this car uses you've got your engine of course and this was clearly a better idea on paper than in execution whiteboard markers don't work so great on windows regardless we've got our engine that is sending power to a motor generator unit so this is actually going

to be used to start the engine as well as generate electricity that's going to go to a planetary gearset which will then be matched with another gear which will be used to drive the powered wheels now on the other side of that planetary gearset you also have an electric motor so either the electric motor can send power to the wheels the engine can send power to the wheels or they can both send power to the wheels and you probably can't see any of this but very simply you've got gear set in the center and then the engine and a motor which both send power to that and then it sends that to the wheels on the other hand the more traditional CVT you simply have your engine oh it works better on this window and that will send power to a torque converter or a clutch you could use either and then that's going to send power to a system of pulleys and so that system of pulleys of course have this drive belt and then from that drive belt you will be sending power to a differential and then from the differential to your wheels and so no electric motors involved here this is a more traditional setup and of

course you can have either a clutch or torque converter I believe torque converters are a little bit more common for these kind of setups where you have an engine matched with a CVT transmission so something I thought would be cool to do is to go through ten of the previous things which I've said not to do in other style transmissions and talk about whether or not they apply to a CVT transmission so I have ones on manual automatic and DCTs and so we're going to pull ten of those and see whether or not they apply so the first thing which comes from the manual transmission is resting your hand on the gearshift which of course you can do in a CVT vehicle there's no reason unless you know that might perhaps change gears like it would do in this lexus kind of awkward you know you're just going to start putting it in B and it doesn't really serve as a good hen rest but regardless that's not something you need to worry about n a CVT transmission moving on to number two putting the car in neutral when you come to a stop and there's absolutely no reason to do that pretty much on any transmission except for a manual and so

when you do come to a stop you can leave the car in gear whether it's an e CVT or it has the torque converter clutch if it does have the clutch it will disengage and so you know there's no reason you shouldn't put the car in neutral when you come to a stop number three you shouldn't hold yourself on a hill with the throttle now you really could get away with that in a CVT especially if it does have a torque converter or if it's an e CVT but if it does have a clutch and it's a traditional CVT then you could be kind of worrying that clutch by holding yourself regardless it just makes sense just put your foot on the brake to hold yourself on a hill you don't even use throttle to do that number four should you floor it at low engine RPMs this is something that came about in manuals there's absolutely no reason why you can't do this so you know you can do this in a CVT it'll adjust the gearing accordingly so no reason why that would apply to this number five rest your foot on the clutch pedal if you can find one in a CVT go ahead and rest your foot on that clutch pedal no damage will be done number six don't coast in neutral and this actually will

apply there's no reason to Coast in neutral you can leave it in gear you can save gas with an e CVT it'll actually regenerate that engine so that's a great thing to do and then with the traditional CVT you know it'll adjust the gearing accordingly it can disengage the clutch if it needs to etcetera so no reason to coast within a neutral just leaving in drive for whatever you're doing number seven don't neutral drop your car so you know for a launch and you're just going to be revving it up in neutral and then drop it into gear you're not going to want to do that with the CVT or an automatic so you know something that would apply to all of them and very easily can damage your car and the same things that apply to automatics will apply in this case to a CVT transmission number eight you should always come to a complete let's see if I can spill this right stop when you are changing directions so you know if you're putting in Reverse don't wait you know while you're still creeping back to put it in reverse let the car come to a complete stop and then change directions this can damage you know some of those

transmission components much like I brought this up in the automatic transmission video same things can apply to a CVT you're going to want to come to a complete stop no reason not to do that when changing directions now number nine is about inching so if you just want to kind of inch forward if you're in traffic on pretty much most scenarios with CVT s this isn't going to be a problem with a traditional CVT you'll have a torque converter which can allow for that slip with an e CVT you'll have an electric motor that'll be inching you forward so either of those cases will work the one scenario would be if you do have a clutch based CVT transmission traditional CVT that clutch may not fully engage in order to inch forward and so in that case it would apply where you shouldn't you know spend a whole lot of time inching or going up steep inclines or while towing as you're going to put a lot of heat into that clutch and you can start to wear it down and then finally number ten the last one we're going to talk about here relates to shifting and so this applied to the dual clutch transmission all about the logic of a dual clutch you can do

whatever you want these CVT is for shifting goes down shift up shift you can be on the throttle on the brakes completely doesn't matter it won't mess with the logic you know when I say downshift in a CVT that's because some of these have stepped gear ratios which they'll allow for you to choose between if you have it in a regular automatic mode you won't be doing any of that and it'll just shift the gears accordingly you know choose the right gear ratio for the driving conditions Shen's so thank you guys for watching and if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them below everyone and welcome in this video we're going to be talking about five things which you should never do in your turbocharged car and as you can tell we are in my 2014 Subaru STi which has a 2.5 liter turbocharged engine now the first thing I want to talk about is not running your car hard until you've let everything get up to operating temperature and you know you may think the common
